 We sadly announce the passing of Brian McKenzie Thorne, a distinguished figure in the field of psychotherapy and a pioneer of person-centered counseling in the UK. Thorne passed away peacefully at the age of 88 on May 29, 2024, leaving behind a legacy that has profoundly influenced the therapeutic community and countless individuals around the world.

 

                            Brian McKenzie Thorne, passed away on 29 May 2024.

He was born on June 3, 1935, in Leeds, England, Brian Thorne was a gifted scholar from an early age. He pursued his higher education at the University of Oxford, where he studied theology and developed a deep interest in understanding the human psyche. This passion led him to the field of psychotherapy, where he would make his most significant contributions.


Thorne was a co-founder of the Norwich Centre, an organization dedicated to providing person-centered counseling and training. His work at the Centre and his advocacy for Carl Rogers' person-centered approach helped to establish this method as a credible and respected form of therapy in the UK and beyond. His teachings emphasized empathy, unconditional positive regard, and genuineness as core components of effective therapeutic practice.
