Obituary: Manny Rabacal, Esteemed Engineer and Community Leader, Passes at 74

It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Manny Rabacal, a cherished husband, father, and community leader, who left us on May 30, 2024, at the age of 74. Manny succumbed to complications from heart disease, a condition he battled with courage and resilience.

Manny Rabacal passed away on 30 May 2024.

Born on February 16, 1950, in Cebu City, Philippines, Manny grew up in a close-knit family that instilled in him the values of hard work and compassion. He emigrated to the United States in the 1970s, where he pursued his education in engineering at San Francisco State University. His dedication and expertise in his field led to a successful career as a civil engineer, contributing to numerous landmark projects that enhanced the infrastructure of the Bay Area.

Manny’s professional accomplishments were paralleled by his unwavering commitment to his community. A passionate advocate for Filipino-American causes, he was instrumental in founding the Filipino Community Center in San Francisco, a hub for cultural preservation and social services. His leadership extended to various charitable organizations, where he worked tirelessly to improve the lives of immigrants and the underprivileged.

Beyond his professional and community endeavors, Manny was a devoted family man. He married his college sweetheart, Maria, in 1975, and they built a beautiful life together. Manny was a loving father to their three children—John, Lisa, and Michael—whom he nurtured with the same principles of integrity and generosity that defined his own life.

Manny's kindness, humility, and sense of humor endeared him to all who knew him. He had a unique ability to make everyone feel valued and respected, whether in his professional sphere, community engagements, or personal relationships. His passion for music, particularly his love for playing the guitar, brought joy to family gatherings and community events alike.

Manny Rabacal leaves behind a legacy of service, love, and resilience. His memory will live on in the hearts of his wife Maria, his children John (Sara), Lisa (Mark), and Michael (Emily), and his grandchildren, who will carry forward his spirit of generosity and dedication.

A memorial service will be held on June 5, 2024, at St. Mary’s Church in San Francisco, followed by a celebration of his life at the Filipino Community Center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Manny Rabacal Scholarship Fund, established to support young Filipino-Americans pursuing careers in engineering.

Manny Rabacal will be profoundly missed, but his enduring contributions and the warmth of his spirit will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him.
