Floyd “Chip” Poland, 72, Beloved Community Member and Engineer, Passes Away

 It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Floyd “Chip” Poland, a beloved member of our community, who left us peacefully on June 20, 2024, at the age of 72.  following a courageous battle with pancreatic cancer. Chip was surrounded by his loving family, who will deeply miss his wisdom, kindness, and unwavering support.

Born on July 15, 1951, in Springfield, Illinois, Chip was the eldest son of Margaret and Floyd Poland Sr. Growing up in a tight-knit family, he learned the values of hard work, integrity, and compassion early in life. These qualities defined his character and left a lasting impression on everyone he met.


Chip attended the University of Illinois, where he earned a degree in Mechanical Engineering. His passion for innovation and problem-solving led him to a successful career at General Electric, where he worked for over 35 years. He was admired by his colleagues for his expertise, dedication, and mentorship.


Beyond his professional achievements, Chip was a devoted husband to his wife, Linda, with whom he shared 48 wonderful years. Together, they raised three children: Emily, Jonathan, and Sarah. He was a loving father who took great pride in his children’s accomplishments and instilled in them the same values he held dear.


An avid outdoorsman, Chip loved fishing, hiking, and camping. He found great joy in nature, often taking his family on adventures that created cherished memories. His passion for the outdoors was matched only by his love for his community. Chip was an active volunteer, dedicating his time to local charities and serving on various boards.


In addition to his immediate family, Chip is survived by his younger brother, Robert, and five grandchildren, who affectionately called him “Grandpa Chip.” He was a constant source of inspiration and encouragement to them, always emphasizing the importance of kindness and perseverance.


Floyd “Chip” Poland will be remembered as a man of great integrity, warmth, and generosity. His legacy lives on in the hearts of his family, friends, and all those whose lives he touched. A celebration of his life will be held on June 30, 2024, at St. Mark’s Church in Springfield, where his community will gather to honor and remember the remarkable life he led.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society in Chip’s memory, reflecting his lifelong commitment to helping others.
