The mother-in-law of Vice President Kashim Shettima, Maryam Abubakar-Albishir, has passed away in Kano

With deep sorrow, we announce the passing of Maryam Abubakar-Albishir on June 22, 2024, at the age of 58 due to complications from cancer. Maryam's life was marked by her unwavering dedication to her family, her community, and her faith.

Maryam Abubakar-Albishir, beloved social worker and advocate for women's rights, passed away at 58 due to complications from cancer.


Born on April 16, 1966, in Kano, Nigeria, Maryam was the cherished daughter of the late Abubakar and Aisha Albishir. She pursued her education with passion, graduating with honors from Bayero University Kano, where she majored in Social Sciences. Maryam's academic achievements were a testament to her intellect and perseverance.


Maryam devoted her professional life to public service, working tirelessly as a social worker and community leader. Her efforts in advocating for women's rights and children's education significantly impacted the lives of many in her community. Maryam's colleagues and those she served admired her for her empathy, leadership, and relentless pursuit of justice and equality.


As a devoted wife and mother, Maryam's family was the center of her world. She was married to Ahmed Abubakar for 35 years, and together they raised four children, instilling in them the values of kindness, education, and community service. Her home was a sanctuary of love and support, always open to friends and family.


Maryam was also an active member of her mosque, participating in numerous charitable activities and outreach programs. Her faith was her guiding light, and she lived her life with integrity and compassion, inspiring all who knew her.


She is survived by her husband, Ahmed, her children, Fatima, Amina, Usman, and Khalid, and her siblings, Ibrahim and Zainab. Maryam's legacy of love, service, and dedication will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and community.


A memorial service will be held on June 28, 2024, at the Kano Central Mosque. The family invites all who knew and loved Maryam to join in celebrating her life. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Maryam Abubakar-Albishir Foundation for Women and Children's Education.


Maryam Abubakar-Albishir will be remembered for her boundless compassion, unwavering dedication, and the positive impact she made on so many lives. She will be deeply missed and forever cherished.
