Orris Robinson, Esteemed Educator and Community Leader, Passes Away at 74

 Orris Robinson, a cherished educator and prominent figure in his community, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2024, at the age of 74. His dedication to education and unwavering commitment to community service left an indelible mark on all who had the privilege of knowing him.

Born on August 12, 1949, in Springfield, Illinois, Orris was the son of Margaret and James Robinson. From a young age, he exhibited a profound love for learning and a keen interest in helping others, traits that would define his life's work. Orris pursued his passion for education at the University of Illinois, where he earned a Bachelor's degree in Education and later a Master's degree in Educational Leadership.

Orris began his teaching career in 1971 at Lincoln High School, where he quickly became a beloved figure among students and colleagues alike. Known for his innovative teaching methods and genuine care for his students' well-being, Orris inspired countless young minds over the course of his 35-year tenure. His efforts in the classroom were recognized with numerous awards, including the Teacher of the Year award in 1995.

Beyond his professional accomplishments, Orris was deeply committed to his community. He served on the Springfield School Board for over a decade, advocating for educational reforms and better resources for underprivileged schools. Orris was also a dedicated volunteer at the local food bank and a mentor for at-risk youth, demonstrating his belief in the power of education and compassion to transform lives.

In 2006, Orris retired from teaching but continued to be an active and influential presence in the community. He authored several books on educational theory and practices, sharing his vast knowledge and experience with a broader audience. Orris's contributions to education were further honored when the Springfield Community Center named its library after him in 2012.

Orris is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Janet Robinson, their three children—Mark, Laura, and Steven—and six grandchildren. His family remembers him as a loving husband, devoted father, and doting grandfather whose wisdom, kindness, and sense of humor brought joy to every family gathering.

A memorial service will be held on June 10, 2024, at the Springfield Community Church, followed by a celebration of his life at the community center. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Orris Robinson Scholarship Fund, established to support aspiring educators in achieving their dreams.

Orris Robinson's legacy of dedication, compassion, and service will continue to inspire and guide future generations. He will be deeply missed but fondly remembered by all who had the honor of knowing him.
