 It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Ryan Bowles, the esteemed Athletic Director of St. Olaf College, who passed away on June 20, 2024, at the age of 47. Ryan's sudden departure has left a deep void in the hearts of his family, colleagues, and the St. Olaf community.

Born on August 15, 1976, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, Ryan demonstrated a passion for sports and leadership from a young age. He attended the University of Minnesota, where he earned his degree in Sports Management. His dedication and commitment to athletics led him to a distinguished career in sports administration.


Ryan joined St. Olaf College in 2015 as the Athletic Director, where he quickly became a beloved figure. Under his leadership, the athletic program flourished, with numerous teams achieving unprecedented success. His innovative approach and unwavering support for student-athletes transformed St. Olaf’s sports culture, fostering a spirit of excellence and camaraderie.


Beyond his professional achievements, Ryan was known for his warm personality, infectious enthusiasm, and genuine care for others. He was a mentor to many, always willing to lend an ear or offer guidance. His dedication extended beyond the playing fields, impacting the lives of countless students and colleagues.


Ryan is survived by his loving wife, Emily, and their two children, Lucas and Madison. He was a devoted husband and father, whose family meant the world to him. His legacy of love, dedication, and leadership will be carried on by those who knew and loved him.


A celebration of Ryan's life will be held on June 27, 2024, at St. Olaf College’s Scotland Center, where the community will gather to honor his remarkable contributions and cherish the memories he leaves behind.


In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Ryan Bowles Memorial Scholarship Fund, established to support future student-athletes in their academic and athletic pursuits.
