 Tin Oo, a revered figure in Myanmar's pro-democracy movement and a close ally of Aung San Suu Kyi, passed away on May 29, 2024, at the age of 96, due to complications related to pneumonia. His life was a testament to unwavering dedication to the pursuit of freedom and justice for his country.

Born on March 3, 1928, in Pathein, Myanmar, Tin Oo’s early life was marked by his distinguished military career. Rising to the rank of general, he served as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces. However, his career took a dramatic turn when he was imprisoned in 1976, following allegations of involvement in a coup plot against the military regime.

After his release in 1980, Tin Oo became a pivotal figure in Myanmar’s struggle for democracy. In 1988, he co-founded the National League for Democracy (NLD) alongside Aung San Suu Kyi. As the NLD’s Vice Chairman, Tin Oo played a critical role in the party's strategies and movements against the ruling junta. Despite facing multiple imprisonments and house arrests, his resolve never wavered.

Tin Oo’s contributions were not limited to his political endeavors. He was also a mentor and symbol of resilience for many young activists. His leadership and sacrifices were instrumental in keeping the democratic aspirations alive during Myanmar's darkest times.
