In Loving Memory of Rosemary Burns: Dedicated Educator and Cherished Community Member

It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Rosemary Burns, a beloved member of our community, who passed away peacefully on July 2, 2024, due to complications from a prolonged battle with cancer.

Rosemary Burns, a beloved elementary school teacher and dedicated community member, passed away on July 2, 2024, at the age of 76

Born on April 15, 1948, in Springfield, Illinois, Rosemary was the daughter of Edward and Margaret Burns. She graduated from Springfield High School in 1966 and went on to earn her degree in Education from the University of Illinois in 1970.


Rosemary dedicated her life to education, spending over 35 years as an elementary school teacher. Her passion for teaching and her love for her students were evident in everything she did. She was known for her innovative teaching methods and her ability to inspire a love of learning in her students. Her colleagues admired her dedication, and her students fondly remember her as a caring and supportive mentor.


Beyond her professional life, Rosemary was an active member of her community. She volunteered at the local food bank, participated in numerous community events, and was a long-time member of St. Mary's Church, where she was involved in various church activities and outreach programs. Her kindness, generosity, and unwavering faith touched the lives of many.


Rosemary was also a devoted mother and grandmother. She is survived by her three children, Michael (Sarah) Burns of Chicago, IL; Jennifer (Mark) Thompson of Springfield, IL; and David (Emily) Burns of Seattle, WA; as well as her five cherished grandchildren, Emma, Jack, Lily, Ethan, and Grace. She is also survived by her sister, Patricia (John) Harris of St. Louis, MO.


Rosemary had a passion for gardening, reading, and spending time with her family. Her garden was a testament to her love of nature, and her home was always filled with the warmth and laughter of her loved ones. Her legacy of love, kindness, and dedication will continue to inspire all who knew her.


A memorial service to celebrate Rosemary's life will be held on July 10, 2024, at 2:00 PM at St. Mary's Church in Springfield. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Springfield Food Bank or the American Cancer Society in her memory.


Rosemary Burns will be deeply missed by her family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing her. Her spirit will live on in the hearts of those she touched.
